Have we overlooked something fundamental in Europes port electrification ambitions?

European Commission has decided to electrify our ports. #AFIR and #FuelEUMaritime have established the direction, the obligations and the deadlines.

But have we really thought through who is supposed to deliver all this? And, perhaps more importantly, who will invest, who will manage the electricity, and who will carry the risks? What began as a discussion about shore power has led us to question something considerably broader.

The UTILITY TRAP, co-authored with Professor John Prousalidis, Syb Ten Cate Hoedemaker and Dr Dr. Alex Papalexopoulos, is a comprehensive examination of a potential structural weakness in the way Europe is approaching port electrification.

But this is not simply about identifying a problem. It is also about the #AgeofOPS, the emergence of ports as energy hubs, and what we foresee will become over a €100 billion European economic electron ecosystem.

The ambition is there. The technology exists. The opportunity is enormous. So what could possibly be holding us back?

We invite you to read our paper, challenge our thinking and join the conversation.
